Which iPhones can you compare?

A young blonde woman in a burgundy hat smiles as she reads something on her smartphone while sitting outside in a lively street cafe.

Since 2007, Apple has released a new iPhone every year, so there are plenty of models to compare. A newer range offers slightly smarter features than its predecessor. For example, compare the differences between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16. The question is whether these features are worth buying the new version for you, or whether the specifications of the older iPhone range suit your phone use just as well. That’s why it’s smart to compare different ranges. We’ve listed the differences between the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 for you, as well as the differences between the iPhone 15 and iPhone 14, and between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14.

Best iPhone 2025: which should you choose?

Which iPhones are available right now?

The iPhone 17 was launched in September 2025 as the successor to the iPhone 16, which hit the market exactly a year earlier. The iPhone 17e was also launched a year after the iPhone 16e, in March 2026. The iPhone 15, iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 date from September 2023, September 2022 and September 2021 respectively. Below, we take a closer look at the key aspects of the 5 most recent iPhone ranges.

iPhone 17 range

The iPhone 17 range consists of 5 models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and the new, extra-thin iPhone Air. The latter runs on eSIM only, which you can set up easily on your iPhone. All models run on iOS 26 with smart Apple Intelligence features. The A19 chip in the base model and the A19 Pro chip in the iPhone 17 Pro (Max) and iPhone Air deliver powerful performance and offer battery life of up to 30 hours. The iPhone 17 has an ultra-fast 6.3-inch display with an always-on function, high brightness and a scratch-resistant Ceramic Shield 2 screen. The iPhone 17e is the newest entry-level model and offers more power and scratch resistance than the iPhone 16e. The Pro models offer extra power, improved cooling and smart camera upgrades, while the iPhone Air stands out as the thinnest iPhone ever, combining high speed with an ultra-slim design. In short: the iPhone 17 range is faster, smarter and better protected than its predecessors.

iPhone 16 range

At first, the iPhone 16 range consisted of the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. A few months later, the iPhone 16e was added. This is the first range to feature Apple Intelligence, the smart AI-driven technology that lets you, for example, edit photos or write emails with ease. To run these AI features smoothly, the iPhone 16 range needs a powerful processor. The A18 chip meets that need and is significantly stronger than the chips in earlier ranges. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max even run on the more powerful A18 Pro chip. The camera and battery of this iPhone range also received a serious upgrade compared to earlier ranges.

iPhone 15 range

Like most iPhone ranges, the iPhone 15 includes, besides the base model, a Plus, Pro and Pro Max version. The standard model and the iPhone 15 Plus feature the A16 chip, while the Pro and Pro Max variants have the even faster A17 chip. The entire iPhone 15 range is the first to include a USB-C port instead of the Lightning port. Since the iPhone 15 range, you charge Apple phones with the same charger as all other smartphones. In addition, all iPhone 15 models feature Dynamic Island. This is the smart central bar that displays notifications, handy if you want to quickly reply to a message or keep track of your favourite club’s score. This feature is also on the Pro and Pro Max models of the iPhone 14, but only since the iPhone 15 range do all models include Dynamic Island.

iPhone 14 range

The iPhone 14 is the first smartphone to be available with 6 GB of RAM. Apps run faster and more smoothly on an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max than on their predecessors. Other key innovations of the iPhone 14 were in the camera. For the first time, an iPhone model had a camera sensor that took sharp, crystal-clear photos even in low light.

iPhone 13 range

The iPhone 13 range is, for now, the last to include a compact mini model. The 5.4-inch display of the iPhone 13 mini fits easily in your trouser pocket or hip bag. The iPhone 13 is one of the first smartphones to support 5G, so you can still browse the internet at lightning speed. In addition, since the iPhone 13, Apple has used powerful ProMotion display technology. This makes the iPhone suitable for playing fast, large games.

Our advice on comparing iPhones

Two young women happily take a selfie in front of a pink background; one holds the phone and the other smiles and waves at the camera.

Compare iPhones by range and by the features that matter to you. Newer generations often offer faster chips, better cameras and longer battery life, but older ranges can fit your daily use just as well. So, check the differences between iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14 and 13. The iPhone 17 range delivers top performance and smart AI, while the iPhone 16 range was the first with Apple Intelligence. Since the iPhone 15, all iPhones have a USB-C port and Dynamic Island. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 ranges are very similar and feature a crystal-clear camera set-up and powerful display technology.
